Ki Demonstration

The application of Aiki In the techniques demonstrated by Kashiwaya sensei is analysed below.

Analysis

At a time of 0.41 Uke comes to lift Tori by his arm pits. Tori moves forward to induce Uke to place his leading foot on the ground. Tori then induces Uke to apply Aiki by withdrawing upper body just as Uke is closing his hold on Tori's arm pits. This action induces Uke to reverse the muscle torque about the ankle joint of his leading leg so that he can follow Tori's arm pits. Uke is then unbalanced to the front by his forward momentum and is therefore unable to lift Tori.  Aiki-Feint

Analysis

At a time of 1.07 both Uke's come to lift Tori by his forearms. As each Uke lowers his body to prepare to lift Tori, Tori induces each Uke to apply Aiki by moving his forearm upwards and to the front. This action induces each Uke to reverse the muscle torque about his ankle joints in order to follow Tori's forearm and become unbalanced to the front. The Uke's are then unable to lift Tori without becoming thrown forwards/downwards by their own force. Aiki-Feint

Analysis

At a time of 1.30 Uke comes to bend Tori's arm. Tori induces Uke to apply Aiki by asking him to pull downwards on the upper arm whilst pushing upwards on the forearm. This makes it difficult for Uke to bend Tori's arm because the muscle torques about the foot joints for pulling downwards are in the opposite direction to that required to lift upwards. Aiki-Lead

Analysis

At a time of 2.10 Tori places his little finger over Uke's forearm and instructs Uke to push him backwards. Tori induces Uke to apply Aiki by resting his weight on Uke's forearm prior to Uke attempting to push Tori. This action induces Uke to support Tori's weight by reversing the muscle torque about his ankle joints that he needs to push with. Uke is then unbalanced to the rear by the reaction force due to him pushing with his arms. Uke is then easily pushed to the rear by Tori stepping forward with an unbendable arm. Aiki-Lead
