『合気道の奥義』「合気上げ」「合気下げ」解説 合気錬体会16 Daito-ryu

The application of Aiki in the techniques demonstrated by senior students of Sagawa Sensei is analysed below.

Analysis

At a time of 0.04 Tori offers his wrists to Uke. Tori induces Uke to apply Aiki by Tori withdrawing his wrists just as Uke is about to grab his wrists. The action of Tori withdrawing his wrists induces Uke to reverse direction of the muscle torque about his ankle joints so that his momentum continues forward and he becomes unbalanced to the front. This makes it easy for Tori to raise his wrists and bring Uke onto his toes. Aiki-Feint

Y.K 01 合気錬体会17

The application of Aiki in the techniques demonstrated is analysed below.

Analysis

At a time of 0.26 Uke holds Tori's wrists from the rear. Tori's downward movement induces Uke to momentarily relax his upper body and to prepare his lower body to pull upwards by extending his legs. Consequently, the muscle torque about Uke's foot joints, due to him pulling upwards, are in the opposite direction to that required to resist Tori moving his wrists/body forward. Uke is unbalanced to the front. Aiki-Lead

Analysis

At a time of 1.00 Uke attacks with a strike to the side of the head. Tori induces Uke to apply Aiki by Tori applying an atemi to Uke's head with his right hand as he blocks the attack with his left. The atemi induces Uke to reverse the muscle torque about his knee joints so that the torque is in the opposite direction to that required to resist the block. Uke is then unbalanced to the rear.
